The Grief Lantern Project

The Grief Lantern Project was created by Dr. Daria Sherman PhD, best-selling author and a bereaved mother, to offer meaningful, comforting resources to parents who have lost a child. Through carefully crafted books and gentle guidance, we help families feel seen, supported, and understood—without rushing their grief or minimizing their pain.

Grief is not a problem to solve. It’s a journey to walk—with compassion, connection, and care.

What We Offer

We provide five books, each written to support different aspects of the grief experience:

•       The Sacred Art of Letting Go – Navigating release and emotional clarity

•       Hello from the Other Side – Exploring enduring connection after loss

•       The Space Between Goodbye and Forever – Honoring the in-between                 and long-term grief

•       Sunflower – Helping children understand memory, love, and resilience

•       The Dreamland Train – A gentle story for children about death and                    connection

Who It’s For

•       Parents and guardians grieving the death of a child

•       Families seeking gentle, emotionally grounded support

•       Communities and professionals looking for resources to share with                  grieving families

Why It Matters

The death of a child brings not only heartbreak, but often collateral losses—strained relationships, disrupted health, and financial instability. These ripple effects deserve acknowledgment and care. The Grief Lantern Project offers tools to help families navigate these layers with dignity and support.

In 2023, Daria Sherman envisioned and helped bring to life the Wind Phone at Quail Hollow State Park in Hartville, Ohio—a quiet, sacred space where grieving hearts can speak to those they’ve lost. Inspired by the original Wind Phone in Japan, this installation offers a vintage rotary phone nestled in nature, inviting visitors to share words, memories, or silence with loved ones who have passed.

The Wind Phone is open to all and serves as a living symbol of connection, remembrance, and emotional release. It complements the mission of The Grief Lantern Project by offering a physical space for healing alongside the literary and emotional support of our books.
